The Importance of Mentoring

Mayumi Pohl(Director of Second Level Ministry)

As Christians we are new creations in Christ. God considers each and every person to be precious, there are many way people are led to salvation, as we look at those led to the Lord, we can praise him. The group identity of Japanese people, is important as people are saved; fellowship at church overflowing with love, living in community, meeting other Christians as living witnesses, “I want to be like everyone else”,“I want to be included in everyone’s family” there are so many people with these feelings who have come to faith in Christ. The “body of Christ” community is indispensable both when considering the spread of the kingdom of God and when thinking about individual beliefs. At the same time, however, don’t forget that a relationship with God is personal.

And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”

Colossians 2:6-7 (NLT)

God wants us to rely on Christ, and stand firm in our faith and walk, and he prays for us in that way. We mature spiritually as we walk forward;“mentoring” is a purposefulapproach. We won’t find the word“mentoring” in the Bible, but as we look at different Bible characters and we see examples of this type of relationship. Moses and Joshua, Naomi and Ruth, Paul and Timothy, Jesus and Peter, James and John as we see the depth of their relationships.

The growth of Jesus’ disciples, and the vision of developing disciples are the purposes of Second Level Ministry. In mentoring “The mentor with a personal relationship with the mentee, praying together and following a plan, an intentional process of assisting in their spiritual growth,” Matthew 28:18-20 (The Great Commission) and 2 Timothy 2:2. “Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.” According to these verses, the purpose of the mentors’ role spiritual growth.

Each word has an important meaning.

Each word has an important meaning.

  • Mentor focuses on the mentee:” To guide: It is not the setting to meet the needs of the mentor. As a result of their connection the “mentor” and the “mentee” may both experience spiritual growth. But the main purpose remains the growth of the “mentee”.

  • “Through personal relationships: Mentoring is not a passive interaction like listening to lectures and speeches, but rather through personal conversation. One-on-one is the best for reaching the heart and making a connection. There is the important element of modeling through life.

  • Intentionally through prayer”: A person’s spiritual growth from the Lord (1 Corinthians 3: 6-7). Through prayer, intentionally lead mentees. Spend time to discover purpose and learn concrete ways to fulfill purpose.

  • “Staying close”: Mentoring is not a one-time event, but a continued walking alongside another in the process of sanctification it may be long term or for just a given period of walking alongside your mentee.

  • “The process of helping spiritual growth“: Although mentees have various things in their lives, mentoring is not the time to solve problems, but help them learn how to deal with how God works through these situations by faith. It’s a time to deal with spiritual problems, such as what to do. It’s a chance to encourage spiritual development, and growth that is seen in being transformed into the likeness of Christ.

The 2018 Mentorship Conference was held in Osaka on June 15-16. Under the theme of “Together”, we reflected together on Ephesians 4:12 “Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ” (NLT).Those growing as a solitary Christian and those seeking training to support the spiritual growth of others were the main participants who gathered and learned from each other. Messages from Pastor Ryo Momoi who is actively involved in discipleship, mentoring in church planting. He challenged us that the intentional practice of love is directly connected to discipleship, trusting others to serve. To create an environment that raises up those who nurture the disciples of Christ.

Interviewed Shiori Furuya, who just recently finished an internship with JCFN!

Hi everyone!

The JCFN blog has started!

My name is Megumi Takezawa (Megumix), and I’m in charge of the second week.

Once a month, we want to give reports about JCFN and returnees ministry activities, hear from guests, and share the appeal of JCFN with all of you! Your prayers, financial support, and encouragement are all indispensable to the ministry of JCFN. So let’s get excited together!

Our first guest is Shiori Furuya, who just recently finished an internship with JCFN. Shiori is currently a graduate student at Tokyo Christian University (TCU). She is studying theology and will graduate in March 2019. We’ll be hearing about JCFN from her perspective as a returnee and as an intern.

So here’s the interview!

*****

Megumix:

What was it that brought you in contact with JCFN and made you decide to be an intern?

Shiori:

I’m originally a returnee, and I remembered feeling frustrated when I saw my friend who became a Christian overseas not connect to a church. But through that, I came to understand how God feels.

I didn’t know about JCFN, but I wanted to do returnee ministry, and at a conference I happened to attend, there was a greeting time where you’re supposed say hi to someone sitting near you. When I talked to the lady sitting next to me, I thought that I had to become friends with her!

I did become friends with her, and we started having lunch together. The first time we went to lunch, she had also invited Erika Mine (now JCFN associate staff).

It was actually the first time for the three of us to meet each other, but as we shared our vision for returnees ministry, Erika told me about JCFN, and I soon went to the office, where I met the director and decided to become an intern. I didn’t know what I would be able to do at first, but I decided to grab hold of the opportunity in front of me

Megumix:

I see. In the Bible, Jesus talks about how He “happened to be passing by,” right? We might think that we are “just happening” to meet different people, but sometimes that can be the start of something. You had a vision given to you by God, and God took that, prepared divine appointments for you, and helped you to take a step forward!

Megumix:

Alright, next question. What kind of new perspective did you gain on returnee ministry as a JCFN internet?

Shiori:

Honestly, I thought that all JCFN did was connect returnees to churches. But as an intern, I realized that it’s not just that, but that it is an important part of returnee ministry, encouraging individual returnees in their lives as children of God and creating places and community for people who became Christians overseas to grow together. Ultimately, although it’s something that everyone needs whether they’re overseas or in Japan, for those who are returnees especially, they offer them support by connecting them to churches and to other people.

Megumix:

I see! So returnee follow-up isn’t just introducing people to churches, communities, or small groups, but the desire is to help each individual grow in their faith and beyond. Then, because they want people to grow, they want to connect them to a good church and to good people.

Megumix:

Last question. What are you hoping to see from JCFN in the future?

Shiori:

It’s important for Japanese churches to know about JCFN and do things together with them. And for those who came to faith in other countries, please bring a breath of fresh air into Japan! I believe that, through returnees, God will bring a positive transformation. Also, I hope that churches and JCFN can, through good networking together, do ministry to encourage people of faith in their growth.

Shiori, thank you for sharing such important thoughts!

Since we heard from the point of view of an intern, maybe you were able to get a more clear picture of what returnee ministry looks like. From the different perspective a returnee has, as people meet each other and pray for one another’s growth, we can see how God can change the world. This, too, is part of returnee ministry. The ministry of JCFN really is broad, deep, and so important.

Shiori, good luck on the remainder of your life as a student! We are praying that God will continue to use you as His precious instrument.

That’s it! Thanks, from Megumix!
