Returning to CC After 17 Years: Experiencing God’s Grace

Chisato Fukuda in Ohio

During Memorial Weekend, I had the opportunity to participate in CC for the first time in many years. I wondered just how long it had been since I last attended, so I looked it up—and to my surprise, it had been 17 years.

There were joyful reunions with familiar faces, as well as new encounters and friendships. The participants represented a wide range of ages, and it was truly a blessing to fellowship with people who had gathered from all across North America. The messages by Pastor Umakoshi and Pastor Ichikawa on the theme of discipleship, the worship times, the baptism ceremony, sharing in small groups, and the many conversations in the hall and over meals—all of these became precious and heartwarming memories.

Looking back on my time at CC, I cannot help but sense the quiet flow of God’s grace. I heard that this year marked the 26th CC gathering, and I can imagine that since God began this ministry, there have been many challenges along the way, including the difficulties brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, despite these challenges, this stream of grace has continued without interruption. I am deeply moved by this, and I am reminded of God’s faithfulness. I am also grateful for the many people who have faithfully served behind the scenes, praying and dedicating themselves to this ministry.

Especially this time, I was encouraged by the opportunity to meet so many young people and witness their passion and energy. As I listened to their stories, I learned that many had traveled to CC because they looked forward to reconnecting with friends who live far away. Seeing them cherish the friendships that God has given them, encouraging one another, and growing together was truly inspiring. Their joy in knowing Jesus, the way that joy is shared with others, and how it is passed on to the next generation—through this continuing flow, I felt that I was witnessing what it means to “become disciples of Jesus.”

After returning to CC for the first time in 17 years, my husband and I were also deeply blessed and able to experience God’s grace in a profound way.

I am once again amazed that God continues to use CC to bring people together, encourage them, and nurture their faith. I pray that this ministry will continue to be richly used by God, and that His grace will be passed on from one generation to the next, and then to the generations that follow.

Beat the Summer Heat with Ice Cream!

Hi, this is Takako Narcisa, the North America admin staff.

In Las Vegas where I live, we’ve already been seeing highs over 100°F, and I’m melting every day.

Summer makes you want to stay indoors, but it also makes cold treats taste even better, right? So today, let’s talk about ice cream lol.

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

Japan has such a wide variety of ice cream flavors, and even convenience stores have seasonal flavors.

The flavors I always get at an ice cream shop are chocolate and lavender.

I love chocolate, and my favorite is the rich chocolate ice cream with brownies. As for lavender, it’s not a flavor I get to enjoy very often, but I love its delicate floral taste.

Recently, my friends from Japan came to Las Vegas, so we went to an ice cream place called “Sorry Not Sorry Creamery” which has locations in Nevada and Southern California.

These are the four flavors my husband and I picked:
Black sesame, chocolate, Ube, and Lavender

Black sesame was a seasonal flavor, and it wasn’t too sweet and had a wonderful, nutty flavor. It was absolutely delicious.

Also, it’s not from an ice cream place, but Trader Joe’s, a popular grocery store in America, also carries one of my favorite frozen treats: pistachio gelato.

They used to have half pistachio and half milk gelato, but now they only have pistachio. The creamy texture of the milk flavor was my favorite, so it’s a bummer, but at least they still carry the pistachio gelato lol.

Summer in Las Vegas is only just beginning.

It’s still going to be hot every day for a while, but let’s get through the summer by eating tasty ice cream.

Make sure to stay cool and take care of yourself!

Central Conference Testimony: Lin Otsuka

This year at CC, we celebrated the baptisms of two of our youth and they are siblings!

Over this post and the next one, we’d like to share their testimonies.
This is Lin Otsuka’s testimony.

Before Jesus saved my life, I was living for myself and being Christian was more of a religion than a relationship. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with myself and I was insecure. My faith was fake and performative.

I think that Jesus really opened my eyes to my faults and His greatness when I started to go to my local church’s youth group in 6th grade. I was blessed with an amazing small group and leaders along with powerful messages and meaningful fellowship. I went on retreats with my church’s youth group and I grew even closer to God.

Although I had been going to CC for a while, being able to be involved in the youth program helped me really feel the presence of God through Pastor Sho’s messages, worship, and fellowship. At EC, I felt that God’s presence was more powerful than ever and I got connected to God a lot. After I realized that Jesus had saved my life and that He is my everything, I have felt so much more at peace.

I am still learning and I have so much to improve on but I am living for Christ and I want to grow closer to Him. I want to do what glorifies Him and what makes Him happy. Does being a Christian and being baptized make me perfect? No. But it is me publicly showing that I accept that I am a sinner but God has saved me from sin and given me new life. God showed me how bad of a sinner I really was and I have been able to rely on Him more. A verse that has really spoken to me was Romans 5:8.

It states:

“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

We are so imperfect and undeserving of His love but Jesus still loves us. He still decided to die for us and He took down our sin with Him. Baptism shows Jesus’ death and resurrection and all who are baptized follow in His path and that is exactly what I want to do.
